Eternal City(영원한 도시): 로마를 Eternal City라고 부르는 것은 잘 아는 사실이지만 왜 그렇게 부르는지에 대하여는 의견이 구구하다. 학자들의 공통된 견해는 두가지이다. 하나는 로마가 유럽 역사에 있어서 언제나 중심에 있었기 때문에 그런 별명을 붙였다는 설명이다. 다른 하나는 비록 로마가 완전히 파괴된 일도 있었고 네번에 걸치 대화재로 잿더미가 된 일도 있었으며 이밖에도 다른 이유로 폐허가 된 일이 여러번 있었지만 그럼에도 불구하고 마치 불사조처럼 다시 태어나기를 반복했기 때문에 '영원한 도시'라는 별명이 붙었다는 주장이다. 실제로 로마는 오늘날에도 아무 곳을 가더라도 옛 로마제국의 유적을 볼수 있으며 또한 아무 곳을 파더라도 옛 제국의 유적이 나오므로 역사를 초월하여서 과거와 현재가 공존하여 있다는 의미에서 '영원한 도시'라고 부르게 되었다는 것이다. 로마를 세계 최대규모의 박물관이라고 부르는 이유는 도시 자체가 고대와 중세, 그리고 근대의 유적으로 덮여 있기 때문이다. 고대의 콜로세움, 중세의 바티칸, 근대의 포폴로 광장 등은 과연 로마가 영원한 도시라는 점을 실감케 해주는 것이다.
