○ L'abborrita rivale a me sfuggia

주세페 베르디의 '아이다'(Aida) 4막에서 암네리스와 라다메스의 듀엣 L'abborrita rivale a me sfuggia(내가 증오하는 라이발은 도망갔도다): 라다메스는 군사기밀을 누출한 죄로 구속되어 사제들의 판결을 기다리고 있다. 반역자에 대한 처벌은 사형뿐이다. 라다메스를 사랑하고 있는 암네리스 공주는 어떻게 해서든지 라다메스를 살리고 싶다. 암네리스는 라다메스가 무죄인 것을 믿고 싶다. 하지만 너무나 증거가 확실해서 걱정이다. 암네리스는 감옥에 갇혀 있는 라다메스를 찾아간다. 있는 그대로 죄를 자백하고 의도적인 것이 아니었다고 주장하면 왕에게 얘기해서 목숨만을 살려보겠다고 말한다. 그러나 라다메스는 암네리스의 사랑을 받아 줄수 없다. 그에게는 따로 사랑하는 아이다가 있기 때문이다. 암네리스와 라다메스의 듀엣은 러브 듀엣이 아니다. 오히려 진실과 양심을 내보이는 노래이다. 서정적이면서도 드라마틱한 분위기가 여실히 표현된 노래이다. 거의 10여분에 이르는 긴 듀엣이다.

○ Flower Duet...Scuoti quella fronda di ciliegio

자코모 푸치니의 '나비부인'(Madama Butterfly) 2막에서 초초상과 스즈키의 듀엣 Scuoti quella fronda di ciliegio(벚꽃 나무 가지를 흔들어서): 일명 '꽃의 이중창'(Flower Duet)이라고 부르는 곡이다. 나가사키에 주둔하고 있던 미해군 장교인 벤자민 프랭클린 핀커튼과 결혼한 어린 초초상(나비부인: 15세)은 결혼한지 얼마후 핀커튼이 미국으로 돌아가자 그가 이제나 저제나 돌아올지를 손꼽아 기다린다. 어느덧 두 사람 사이에서 태어난 아들 돌로라(Dolora; 슬픔)는 세살이 되었다. 그러던 어느날 항구에 미해군의 함정 한척이 입항한다. 초초상은 핀커튼이 분명히 다시 오겠다는 약속을 지키기 위해 돌아온 것으로 믿어서 기쁨에 들떠 있다. 항구에 들어온 미해군의 함정은 분명히 핀커튼의 함정이었다. 초초상은 핀커튼을 마중하기 위해 집안을 청소하고 꽃으로 장식하기 시작한다. 마침 봄철이다. 초초상은 스즈키와 함께 마당에 피어있는 벚꽃을 따서 마당에 뿌린다. 아주 귀중한 사람이 오면 마당에 꽃을 뿌리는 관습대로이다. 이 때 초초상과 스즈키가 부르는 노래가 '꽃의 이중창'이다. '꽃의 이중창'이라고 하면 레오 들리브의 오페라 '라크메'에서 인도 처녀 라크메와 하녀 말리카가 강가의 오래된 정자의 돔형 지붕에 만발하여 있는 자스민 꽃을 보고 감탄하여서 부르는 이중창도 유명하지만 '나비부인'에서의 '꽃의 이중창'도 유명하다.  

나비부인(스베틀라나 아크세노바)와 스즈키(유디트 슈미트)가 꽃의 이중창을 부르는 중에 조이가 기뻐서 춤을 추고 있다. 초초상은 아들 돌로라의 이름을 영어로 조이라고 바꾸었다. 취리히 오페라

초초상(인나 로스)과 스즈키(킴벌리 소지오카). 디트로이트 오페라. 인나 로스는 젊은 시절 레나타 스코토가 초초상을 맡았던 모습을 연상케 한다는 얘기를 들었다. 인나 로스(Inna Los)는 몰다비아 출신의 소프라노이다. 오늘날 가장 촉망받고 있는 메조소프라노 중의 하나인 킴벌리 소지오카는 캘리포니아 출신이다.
